Colossians reaffirms the absolute sufficiency of Christ for our Christian life. After discussing the emptiness of human philosophy (2:18-15), Paul continues his argument against the false teachers of Colossae by addressing the next three elements of their heresy.
1. Legalism: A Religion of Human Achievement (vv. 16-17)
2. Mysticism: A Religion of Personal Experience (vv. 18-19)
3. Asceticism: A Religion of Self-Denial (vv. 20-23)
