After setting the historical, theological, and pastoral framework for his Gospel, Luke records God’s heavenly announcement regarding John’s birth to Zacharias. It reminds us that God has not forgotten His promise to Israel to bring salvation to the world. The significance of this announcement is seen in the four different stages of Luke’s narrative.
1. The People: The Righteousness of Zacharias and Elizabeth (vv. 5-7)
2. The Presence: The Revealing of the Angel Gabriel (vv. 8-12)
3. The Prediction: The Revelation concerning John (vv. 13-17)
4. The Provocation: The Response from Zacharias and Elizabeth (vv. 18-25)
