Luke is a master historian. In Luke 3:1-6, he places his historical account in its proper context. He gives his readers four different settings that provide the perfect backdrop for understanding the beginning of John’s ministry.
1. The Historical Setting: The Period of the Forerunner (v. 1)
2. The Geographical Setting: The Place of the Forerunner (v. 2)
3. The Theological Setting: The Preaching of the Forerunner (v. 3)
4. The Prophetical Setting: The Prophecy of the Forerunner (vv. 4-6)
